Nei match che chiudevano la prima giornata di Heineken Cup, ai campioni in carica di Toulon – Castro in campo dal primo minuto – basta un tempo per raggiungere l’obiettivo bonus contro Glasgow; stesso discorso per Exeter che segna 41 punti in un tempo e chiude il discorso contro Cardiff, anche se i Gallesi si riscattano nel secondo tempo e quantomeno raggiungono l’obiettivo minimo del bonus per le quattro mete.
Di tutt’altra caratura è stato l’incontro tra il Racing e Clermont: gli ospiti dominano in lungo e in largo il primo tempo ma non vanno oltre il 9 a 3 in virtù dei tre piazzati di Parra a cui risponde l’unico di Sexton. Rougerie e compagni cominciano all’attacco anche il secondo tempo ma un grillo talpa di Lapeyre fa schizzare la palla nelle mani di Andreu che accelera e termina la sua corsa in meta; Sexton aggiunge la trasformazione ed è sorpasso. La stessa apertura irlandese, pochi minuti dopo, mette a bersaglio il calcio del 13 a 9. Clermont cerca in tutti i modi la via della meta, Sivivatu è uno dei più propositivi tant’è che alla fine sarà anche man of the match, ma la difesa del Racing è superlativa e non concede alcunchè.
